California police used a BearCat armored vehicle to help pursue an armed man who had driven off with a road construction truck Tuesday, dragging a large traffic sign behind it.
The incident happened at about 8 p.m. when police from Fontana, Ontario and other departments responded to a call concerning a stolen Jeep, chasing the vehicle until the driver, who was armed, crashed in the Ontario area, KABC-TV reports. After the crash, the suspect carjacked a construction truck at gunpoint.
A large chase with roughly 10 police cruisers ensued, and the construction vehicle was slowed as it dragged a traffic sign behind it in a shower of sparks. A BearCat armored vehicle was deployed during the chase, and it rammed the side of the construction vehicle, sending it into a traffic divider
Once the vehicle struck the divider, the suspect jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot while talking on his cellphone. According to police, the suspect appeared to try to carjack another vehicle, but he was unsuccessful.
A police K-9 eventually chased down the suspect, grabbing the man's arm. The man was apprehended following a struggle, and a firearm allegedly thrown over a roadway wall by the suspect was later recovered.
